Here's what the AI-native org chart could look like

Fortune reports on Paul Cheek's case that CHROs should own how humans and AI agents work together, citing AIDE Institute research showing just over 30% of S&P 500 executives are AI-literate.

The CHRO title itself needs to change from managing headcount to auditing whether a given role needs a human's judgment or an AI agent's uptime.

Fortune's Kristin Stoller reports on MIT professor Paul Cheek's case for an AI-native org chart: a living document that maps which employees and AI agents can access which systems, spend from which budgets, and weigh in on which decisions, rather than simply who reports to whom.

Cheek argues HR leaders should own how people and AI agents are organized across the enterprise, starting with AI training for executives and employees. He cites research from the AI-Driven Enterprise Institute finding that just over 30% of S&P 500 executives are AI-literate, and that this group achieves 78% stronger AI execution than their peers.

As Cheek tells Fortune, "The CHRO title itself needs to change from managing headcount to auditing whether a given role needs a human's judgment or an AI agent's uptime."
